FOI request detail

Card Payments in Taxis

Request ID: FOI-2606-2324
Date published: 10 November 2023

You asked

What would be helpful context would be the compliance stats if those are available as to the scale of the use on unapproved devices - naturally redacted, just to know how many times in the past 12 months a taxi driver has been reported/warned or sanctioned for use of an unapproved device. I am aware of 3 issues with our members which were "parked" pending the ongoing review but I am aware of the individual circumstances of those and the amount the driver was going to lose as a consequence of non payment but I don't think the level of detail is actually recorded just driver was observed and reported for using an unapproved device.

TfL Ref: FOI-2606-2324

I have been passed your email of 19th October 2023 – shown below - as it contains a request for recorded information.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

I think from my perspective what would be helpful context would be the compliance stats if those are available as to the scale of the use on unapproved devices - naturally redacted, just to know how many times in the past 12 months a taxi driver has been reported/warned or sanctioned for use of an unapproved device.

I can confirm we hold some of the information you have requested. We are unable to provide statistics on the scale of the use of unapproved devices. However, we can confirm the instances in which an Operations Officer has encountered a licensed taxi and found an irregularity in relation to the requirement for the vehicle to have a TfL approved card payment device fixed in the rear passenger compartment.

In the past 12 months, as a result of on-street activity we have reported the following:

  • 20 Taxi drivers for working in a vehicle with an Unapproved Payment Device
  • 5 Taxi drivers for using a secondary payment device
  • 45 Taxi drivers for working in a vehicle with a defective payment device

If this is not the information you are looking for please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely,
