Platform extensions

Request ID: FOI-2595-1920
Date published: 04 December 2019

You asked

Hi TFL Rail’s twitter account has told me that the new nine car Elizabeth Line stock is too long to operate Heathrow to Paddington route. Can you tell which platform on the above ground section of this route need extending and the proposed construction and completion dates please?

We answered

Our Ref:         FOI-2595-1920

Thank you for your request received on 25 November 2019 asking for information about platform extensions.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I

As part of the Crossrail programme, platforms at all stations from Paddington to Heathrow – except Hanwell- have been extended to ensure they can accommodate the nine car trains. This work was completed prior to May 2018.

Hanwell has not been extended, this decision was made due to local opposition to the proposed extensions. However, when the new nine car trains are introduced they will have the capability of selectively unlocking some doors and so, when stopping at Hanwell, only the front 6 carriages doors will be released for opening. We will be introducing the 9 car trains onto our services through Hanwell, once we have completed a further software update.

If this is not the information you are looking for please feel free to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
