FOI request detail

Oyster fare charging rates when using a pre-loaded travelcard outside of the specified zones and in combination with a railcard

Request ID: FOI-2588-1819

You asked

Dear Transport for London, Please could you provide me with the fares charged in the following situations, as well as details explaining how they were calculated: 1. When a user with a Travelcard listed in the Travelcard price table travels to a station outside their Travelcard zone(s). An example of this would be travelling from Waterloo in Zone 1 to Surbiton in Zone 6 with a Zone 1-2 Travelcard loaded. 2. When a user with a Travelcard listed in the Travelcard price table travels to a station outside their Travelcard zone(s) and makes a return on the same day. An example of this would be travelling from Waterloo in Zone 1 to Surbiton in Zone 6 and then later returning from Surbiton to Waterloo with a Zone 1-2 Travelcard loaded. 3. When the same journeys as described in (1.) and (2.) above occur but the user's journey uses a combination of TfL and National Rail. An example of this would travelling from Canary Wharf in Zone 2 to Surbiton in Zone 6 via Waterloo in Zone 1. 4. When the same journeys as described in (1.), (2.) and (3.) above occur but the user ALSO has a 26-30 railcard associated with their Oyster card. These simple fare calculations are not visible anywhere on the site and would be of great use to work out which routes I should be taking and by which methods. I believe in the past (2016) PAYG fare listings have been provided, however firstly the fares have been updated since then and secondly these had no reference to mixed use journeys or return journeys. Thanks.

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request received on 3rd January 2019 about the cost of travelling outside of zone 2 when using a zone 1-2 travelcard.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. Your questions are answered in turn as follows:

Question 1: When a user with a Travelcard listed in the Travelcard price table travels to a station outside their Travelcard zone(s). An example of this would be travelling from Waterloo in Zone 1 to Surbiton in Zone 6 with a Zone 1-2 Travelcard loaded.

Answer: When using a zone 1-2 travelcard, the adult pay as you go fare charged for a journey from London Waterloo to Surbiton is £3.80 in the peak and £2.80 off-peak. These fares are the 2019 extension fares when using National Rail services for zones 3-6.

Question 2: When a user with a Travelcard listed in the Travelcard price table travels to a station outside their Travelcard zone(s) and makes a return on the same day. An example of this would be travelling from Waterloo in Zone 1 to Surbiton in Zone 6 and then later returning from Surbiton to Waterloo with a Zone 1-2 Travelcard loaded.

Answer: This would depend on the exact time of travel. The extension fares listed above would apply. If a journey starts in the evening peak outside of zone 1 (such as travelling from Surbiton) but terminates in zone 1 (such as Waterloo) the fare charged would be the off-peak rate, which in this example is £2.80.

Question 3: When the same journeys as described in (1.) and (2.) above occur but the user's journey uses a combination of TfL and National Rail. An example of this would travelling from Canary Wharf in Zone 2 to Surbiton in Zone 6 via Waterloo in Zone 1.

Answer: If the passenger is using a zone 1-2 travelcard then in this scenario the fares charged are the same as described above. The extension fare portion of the journey would be started at Clapham Junction, covering the rest of the journey to Surbiton. The National Rail extension fare is charged for travel in zones 3-6, with the exact fare applied depending on the time of travel.

Question 4: When the same journeys as described in (1.), (2.) and (3.) above occur but the user ALSO has a 26-30 railcard associated with their Oyster card.

Answer: A 26-30 railcard will offer a discount in the off-peak period only. The discounted fare is calculated at 34% of the adult undiscounted rate, rounded up to the nearest 5 pence. Therefore, in the off-peak, the extension fare charged from Clapham Junction to Surbiton is £1.85.
