We answered
TfL Ref: FOI-2573-2122
Thank you for your further request of 9th February 2022 asking for information about the Low Emission Zone (LEZ).
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.
Specifically you asked:
“Can you confirm when tfl started sending fines out for this as been using this route a long time and recently got a fine, there was no signs along the road stating low emission.”
As explained in my earlier response, the Low Emission Zone came into effect in February 2008 and Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) for non-compliant vehicles will have started to have been issued around that time. However, that said, note that changes to the scheme were introduced in March 2021 - as explained in more detail here:
Following the introduction of these new standards we issued warning notices between 28th February 2021 and 25th April 2021 and began issuing PCNs thereafter.
Note that if you believe that you have been wrongly issued with a Penalty Charge Notice in relation to the Low Emission Zone - or any other TfL Road User Charging scheme - you can make a representation via our website here:
