You asked
Follow-on from FOI-1855-2324:
I was wondering if you’d also be willing to share any reports/documents summarising key data insights/learnings from the 2016 trial at all?
Also would you be able to confirm when the current on-going project began, and when it is expected to produce any similar documents?
We answered
Our Ref: FOI-2542-2324 Thank you for your request received on 19 October 2023 asking for information about the 2016 mobile data trial. Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require. I was wondering if you’d also be willing to share any reports/documents summarising key data insights/learnings from the 2016 trial at all? Please find attached a pdf of an insight session that was undertaken during the 2016 project. Please note that in accordance with TfL’s obligations under Data Protection legislation some personal data has been removed, as required by section 40(2) of the FOI Act. This is because disclosure of this personal data would be a breach of the legislation, specifically the first principle which requires all processing of personal data to be fair and lawful. It would not be fair to disclose this personal information when the individuals have no expectation it would be disclosed and TfL has not satisfied one of the conditions which would make the processing ‘fair’. The main aim of project was to create origin-destination demand matrices for our strategic models but we also wanted to investigate and showcase how else the data could be used. This was also written up in Travel in London report 11 (pages 229 to 235), published in 2018 https://content.tfl.gov.uk/travel-in-london-report-11.pdf It is also important to note that the analysis within the presentation is based on historic data from 2016 and that patterns will have changed in recent years given the pandemic and public transport improvements across London.
Also would you be able to confirm when the current on-going project began, and when it is expected to produce any similar documents? The current project began at the start of this year and the timetable for completion is being reviewed as we discuss the best ways to make use of the mobile phone data and other supporting datasets. Again, the focus is on creating strategic model demand matrices and we are unlikely to major on other insights this time around. If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me. If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
