TfL Ref: 2468-1819

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 12 December 2018 asking for information about air pollution and temperature measuring devices in our bus depots.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. Your request and our answers are as below:

What devices are used to monitor air pollution in London Bus Depots?

Air quality monitoring in London is carried out by borough councils and helps us understand the positive impacts making the bus fleet cleaner is having such as from the roll out of Low Emission Bus Zones. As this is one of a range of borough responsibilities, it is not an activity that TfL provides as well, either in boroughs or other locations such as bus depots. To minimise emissions from the bus fleet, we and our private operators encourage good practice such as switching off engines if vehicles are not about to go back into service, supported by driver guidance and posters at garages. Some new buses also have automatic shut off technology which switches the engine off automatically after a minute or so without the driver needing to do anything. This provides a technical solution to keeping emissions to as low as level as possible. Our main priority, however, is to tackle bus tailpipe emissions at source, currently by raising around two-thirds of the current 9,000-strong bus fleet to the ultra-clean Euro VI engine emission standard. The remainder of the fleet will achieve the same standard or better by 2020. By 2037, our target is to make the entire fleet zero-emission, to enhance air quality much further. Around 130 buses are already zero emission and this number will rise to around 200 vehicles in the second half of 2019.

How often are air pollution monitored in London Bus Depots?

See above.

What devices are used in London bus depots to monitor temperature in buildings?

You would need to approach private bus operators for this information as they own or lease depots. We contract out bus services for London and they provide the premises for their operations.

What devices are available for bus drivers to monitor temperature in buses (not outside)?

There are no devices within buses to check saloon temperatures. We provide thermostatically-controlled air cooling and open windows on double-deck buses to improve air flow and comfort. All buses also have white roofs and ceiling insulation to reflect heat, tinted windows to reduce heat building up from sunlight, insulation around the engine and air flow from opening windows. We continue to look for ways to make travel in buses more comfortable.

What devices are used in buses to protect bus driver from air pollution?

Driver cabs have air conditioning as they are largely self contained areas. Drivers can operate the vehicle from the cab with the windows closed and the air conditioning on. Most air conditioning and cooling systems have filters to remove particles such as dust.

What devices are used to monitor air pollution levels for bus drivers while driving the bus in London's congested streets?

See above.
