Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 13 November 2019 asking for information about crimes on the Underground.
Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.
1. The total number of crimes that occurred in the twelve-month period beginning 01/11/2018 and ending 31/10/2019 on each Underground line.
3. The total number of crimes that occurred in the twelve-month period beginning 01/11/2017 and ending 31/10/2018 on each Underground line.
5. The total number of crimes that occurred in the twelve-month period beginning 01/11/2016 and ending 31/10/2017 on each Underground line.
Please see the table below in response to the above questions. Data for the most recent year is only currently available up to 31/08/19. No data between 01/09/19 – 31/10/19 is held by TfL and would need be requested from the British Transport Police (BTP). Any figures requested from the BTP may be different to that held by TfL, as data TfL holds is not live, so any amendments to crime classifications would not be available to TfL.
To provide a breakdown of crimes by London Underground line, crimes that have occurred at stations with more than one Tube line have had to be allocated to a particular line. Additionally, although stations may have multiple lines running through them, each particular station is assigned to a line, so while a crime may have been committed on the Central line, as an example, if it was reported at Stratford, as it is classed as a Jubilee line station, the crime would be recorded as having taken place on the Jubilee line. Where crimes have taken place on the platform, they have been assigned to the line that the platform serves.

London Underground carries around 1.4 billion passengers annually and is a safe, low crime environment. The highest volume crime is theft of personal property and now accounts for around 50%. Levels of theft have increased over the last few years. The rise in theft can in part be explained by the BTP launching their on-line crime reporting in October 2018 which means that the BTP are now recording offences which may previously have gone unreported. Despite this, we know that our public transport networks are being targeted by prolific thieves working as part of organised criminal networks. The police are using a range of tactics to deter, detect and disrupt their criminal activity including plain clothes and uniformed officer patrols, large scale operations and investigations. We have been supporting this significant police effort by promoting crime prevention advice to our customers. As part of Operation Farrier, the BTP has made some significant arrests that have led to notable custodial sentences. This activity continues.
The specific information you have requested can be found in the table below. The most common offence was theft, unless otherwise stated:
