Request ID: FOI-2428-1920
Date published: 25 November 2019

You asked

I want to know how many TFL staff members have reported assaults and violent crime committed against them over the last 3 years?

We answered

Our Ref:         FOI-2428-1920

Thank you for your request received on 12 November 2019 asking for information about violent crimes committed against our staff.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require.

Our staff work hard to serve the millions of customers who use the transport network everyday and have the right to go about their work without fear or intimidation. TfL takes all violence and aggression against their staff extremely seriously and work closely with our policing partners to catch and prosecute offenders to ensure there are consequences for their actions. We are currently working on a pan-TfL strategy relating to work-related violence and aggression, with the final strategy due to published early next year.

TfL will always push for the strongest penalties against offenders.

Please see the table below for the number of assaults reported to TfL:

Period Physical assault (with and without injury)
Nov ’16 to Oct ‘17 505
Nov ’17 to Oct ‘18 612
Nov ’18 to Oct ‘19 628
Total 1745

TfL also publishes figures quarterly health, safety and environment reports, with figures for work-related violence and aggression:

https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/safety-sustainability-hr

These figures contain both physical and verbal assaults on staff and are incidents that are reported to the police. As staff may not report incidents to TfL that are reported to the police and vice versa, these may differ from the figures published above or requested from each respective police force.

If this is not the information you are looking for please feel free to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
