Date published: 12 July 2017

You asked

I am currently doing my 3rd Year Project in introducing a prototype device that helps in reducing accident from occurring at road junction. Here are my questions: 1) What is the overall cost of installing per cats eyes/flushstuds at road junction (including labour cost)? 2) What is the overall cost for installing single traffic light, road sign and drilling work at the road junction.

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-2424-1617

Thank you for your email received by us on 06 March 2017 asking for information about the total cost of installing stud/cat’s eyes on junctions.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You asked:

1) What is the overall cost of installing per cats eyes/flushstuds at road junction (including labour cost)?

We do not use the traditional cat’s eyes, we only use the reflective road studs.

The cost of purchasing and installing a reflective road stud on our contract is circa £1.30 (varies by London Highways Alliance Contract (LoHAC) area from £1.09 to £1.70).  We are unable to split that out into how much is part and how much is labour due to the way our contract works (supply and install).

2) What is the overall cost for installing single traffic light, road sign and drilling work at the road junction?

The overall cost would be of the order of £1,300.  Please note that a single traffic light is not normally installed without being part of a wider traffic control system.   This applies to a traffic light at a standard height, which is easily accessible without requiring any specialist traffic management and any permitting. There are additional costs incurred due to the complexity of making the traffic light functional within a control system, these costs have not been included.

If this is not the information you are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
