Thank you for your request received on 24 November 2017 asking for information about faulty escalators. I apologise for the delay in my response.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require. You asked:

Please could you provide a list of incidents of broken escalators at all TfL stations in the past 36 months, broken down by station type (e.g. underground, overground), station line (e.g. central, jubilee), station name, date of breakage, date of repair, and any notes on the cause of the breakage.

We carry over 1.3bn customers on the London Underground each year. Escalators on our network are heavy-duty machines that carry millions of people each year and they must be refurbished every 20 years and replaced every 40 years, as well as having a continual programme of maintenance and renewal, to ensure that they are kept in top condition. Escalator availability on all London Underground lines is currently at the highest level in the last five years, with 97.7 per cent.
