We answered

Our ref: FOI-2410-1920

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 11 November 2019 asking for information about revenue inspectors.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

Contactless uses a ‘back office system’ where transactions (taps) including those from revenue inspection devices are processed at the end of each day. Tackling fare evasion is a priority for TfL and as such we have developed mechanisms to ensure that our revenue inspectors have the tools required to protect TfL’s revenue. A number of inspection scenarios currently exist, where rail revenue inspectors have knowledge at the time of inspection, whether a customer has touched in and out correctly whilst making journeys on TfL services.

If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
