Oyster PAYG Boundary Fares and Travelcard extension fares
Request ID: FOI-2382-2425 Date published: 20 November 2024
You asked
Dear Sir or Madam,
Please could you provide the total number of Oyster pay as you go (PAYG) journeys sold in rail year 2024 (April 2023 – March 2024), or the most recent 12 month period for which TfL is able to provide data.
We are particularly interested in exploring the use of Boundary Fares and Travelcard extension fares, and so, to the extent that this information is available, we would like the data to be broken down by:
• Rail period of purchase;
• Origin and destination station;
• Fare type (PAYG, Travelcard, Travelcard extension, Boundary Fares, etc.);
• period of validity of the associated Travelcard (Annual/Monthly/Weekly/Daily/Other);
• zonal validity of the associated Travelcard.
Note here ‘Travelcard extension’ refers to the fare that is automatically applied when the passenger touches in/out outside their Travelcard validity.
As explained to us in a response to our previous request (see attached), we understand this data is available and (given the request is limited to one year of data) should fall within TfL’s proportionality constraints.

Please note that these are for completed journeys only (where a passenger taps in and out) and do not include PAYG journeys made using contactless payment cards.
We are unable to provide the origin and destination for these ‘mixed’ journeys, or any details about the Travelcard involved. We are also unable to distinguish singles tickets purchased from London Underground stations used to extend a Travelcard from ordinary singles purchased for a journey with no Travelcard and do not have access to National Rail sales of their tickets.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
