Our ref: FOI-2376-2122/GH
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 18 January 2022 asking for information about the reinstatement of the left turn at junction of Chestnut Grove and Balham High Road.
Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.
Wandsworth Officers raised local resident concerns about traffic turning left at an uncontrolled junction into Marius Road and using local roads instead of Chestnut Grove. Analysis of survey data as well as an audit of the designs was undertaken to understand the impacts of removal of the temporary measures.
A safety review of reinstating the left turn at Chestnut Grove noted that “left hook conflicts could increase albeit partially mitigated through proposed markings through the junction”.
As an aside, we plan to upgrade the traffic signals at the junction to include an early release and low level traffic signals for cycles. It is also anticipated this will furthermore mitigate for left hook conflicts.
