Fare evasion

Request ID: FOI-2376-1718
Date published: 22 February 2018

You asked

How many revenue protection officers do TFL employ and how much revenue is lost per year because of fare evasion.

We answered

Our ref: FOI-2376-1718

Thank you for your email received on 22 November 2017 asking for information about bus fare evasion.

Your request has been processed in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. You asked:

  1. How many RPIs are employed on the buses?

The current budgeted establishment of RPIs on buses is 220.

  1. How much revenue is lost per year because of fare evasion on New Route Master buses

We do not have a yearly figure for revenue lost as a result of fare evasion on New Route Master buses (NRM).  Please find attached the most recent annual revenue loss figures for the network as a whole, broken down by transport mode.

  1. How does this compare to fare evasion on the Old Route Masters?

These figures are not available.

  1. What percentage of revenue is lost on NRMs compared with the total income?

As above in Q2, we cannot break provide figures on revenue lost for NRM’s.  You maybe interested to know in 2016 two surveys were carried out to ascertain the fare evasion rate on New Routemaster buses. The results were approximately 1% higher than the network average, which is currently running at 1.3%. However, evasion rates on specific routes vary depending on the area they run through and passenger profile and the rates seen on NRMs are broadly in line with other routes in similar areas.

If this is not the information you are looking for, please feel free to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
