Comments: I like to request information about what is wrong with 154. It has been so many station changes in past 2 weeks. At least half of the time I use, it starts with final destination to Morden and leave me in the rose hill. It is a great inconvenience to us. It shouldn't be done this often. So i like to request these information. - how many times it has final stop changes in past two weeks - the breakdown of the reasons for these changes - what is the percentile 154 is in in terms of final dest changes among other lines - do you have any plan to improve 154 and make sure this changes are less - would you refund my past 4 ticket fee

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 8 October 2024 asking for information about bus route 154.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You specifically asked: Comments: I like to request information about what is wrong with 154. It has been so many station changes in past 2 weeks. At least half of the time I use, it starts with final destination to Morden and leave me in the rose hill. It is a great inconvenience to us. It shouldn't be done this often.

So i like to request these information.
- how many times it has final stop changes in past two weeks
- the breakdown of the reasons for these changes
- what is the percentile 154 is in in terms of final dest changes among other lines
- do you have any plan to improve 154 and make sure this changes are less

The route 154 data from the 05th to 18th October as below:

  • The route 154 was curtailed short of its journey away from Morden Station on 177 occasions, for the following reasons;

2 x OD01 - Other deductible

4 x ON01 - Incident/occurrence directly involving driver or bus

2 x ON03 - Road blocked/closed/bus diverted

2 x ON06 - Other Incident

167 x TR01 - Traffic delays (location or reasons of traffic unknown)

NB We have lost mileage codes such as: Traffic, other non-deductible (incident/occurrence) and mechanical. Anything with is not covered under these scenarios is usually coded as Other Deductible: the cause for this lost mileage could be a variety of reasons such as staff error, bus blocked in garage etc.

We would not know if the final destination was changed on-route or before departing the first bus stop.

In terms of the percentile, we do not have this information in a way that is readily reportable.  We would therefore need to create this data set and decipher the data in order to answer your question and then look at every bus route to establish where bus route 154 would be in percentile terms. To do this would exceed the cost limit, however if you want to provide a specific bus route to compare it to then please submit a new request for this data.

The 154 is generally performing better than its minimum performance standard for reliability, and service control strategies are being used as appropriate to protect the service across the length of the route.

In recent periods, route 154 has seen more delays when compared against its historic average, which we understand is due to traffic along its route. This has impacted the route since at least November 2022, meaning that the route tends to cover less than its expected total mileage.

A route may also be curtailed when the operator employs a service control strategy that helps them to maintain as even a service as possible across the full length of a route. If there are severe delays in Croydon preventing a 154 bus from reaching Morden on schedule, for example, the service control strategy implemented may involve curtailing a bus so that one end of the route still receives a bus service. Some service control strategies can inevitably cause gaps in the service a result, but these are carried out at the discretion of the bus operator’s route controllers.

It is also important to note that buses cannot terminate anywhere; route 154 in particular has curtailment points at Sutton Bus Garage and on Shotfield (near Wallington station), where multiple connecting services are available.

We have also reached out to Go-Ahead, the operator of this route, to request a formal response.
