Our Ref: FOI-2351-2223
Thank you for your request received on 19 December 2022 asking for information about the cost of implementing the Ultra-low Emission Zone (ULEZ) Extension.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require.
The London-wide ULEZ is vital in tackling the triple threats of air pollution, the climate emergency and congestion, and will ensure millions more people can breathe cleaner air. Thousands die prematurely each year as a result of toxic pollution and it causes children to grow up with stunted lungs and increases the risk of dementia in older people.
The cost to deliver the ULEZ up to the north and south circular roads was c.£115m which includes the cost to supply and install all additional cameras and signs, back office systems and communication upgrades, marketing campaigns and all project overheads.
Based on current assumptions made, the estimated cost to set up the expanded London-wide ULEZ is in the range of £150-160m. This includes costs of signage, detection and enforcement infrastructure, a customer awareness campaign, project overheads and risk.
