Night tube operators promoted to full time positions in the last 18 months pre 12 month tie in

Request ID: FOI-2332-2021
Date published: 03 March 2021

You asked

I am requesting the number of train operators who were contracted to London Underground as TO23 Night Tube train operators who, before the 12 month tie in period had expired, were given full time positions as train operators (TO21). I am looking for information for all lines on the London Underground network. I also request the number of staff who started training for full time TO21 positions in the last 18 months after having initially applied for a Night Tube T023 position.

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-2332-2021

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 15th February 2021 asking for information about night tube operators.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

Night tube operators promoted to full time positions in the last 18 months pre 12 month tie in: I am requesting the number of train operators who were contracted to London Underground as TO23 Night Tube train operators who, before the 12 month tie in period had expired, were given full time positions as train operators (TO21). I am looking for information for all lines on the London Underground network.

I also request the number of staff who started training for full time TO21 positions in the last 18 months after having initially applied for a Night Tube T023 position.

In response to your first question, HR colleagues have reviewed their records for any TO23 to TO21 changes in the last 18 months and found that there were no such changes. Note that during the course of the coronavirus pandemic there may have been instances where Night Tube Operators have been asked to work day shifts or extended hours - as part of a revised rota brought about because of the furloughing of staff, for example - but their grades and terms and conditions will not have been altered during this time.

In response to your second question, TfL does not hold the information to answer. While individuals will apply for a specific role, the training for both TO21 and TO 23 roles is identical. We do not keep a record of whether a staff member started training for a TO21 position or a TO23 position.

If you are considering submitting a further FOI request please think carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. Where requests are made, please note that our response time may be impacted by the current situation.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely,
