TfL Ref: 2287-2425
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 16 October 2024 asking for information about Surrey Canal Road station.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require.
The Government introduced the Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF) in 2017 and £80.8m was awarded to six projects along the Windrush line, originally including a new station at Surrey Canal Road between Queen’s Road Peckham station and Surrey Quays station. However, the initial design work revealed cost inflation which meant that other projects were prioritised as part of a first phase and Surrey Canal Road station became unfunded.
We have successfully secured a £25m contribution from a local developer, Renewal Group, but there still remains a funding gap on the programme. We are now re-starting design work on the project to obtain greater certainty on the cost and programme for the scheme. Once concept design work has concluded next financial year, we will have a better understanding on the additional funding required and a timeline for delivery.
We will continue to work closely with government, the London Borough of Lewisham and developers/third parties about the potential for additional funding to support the new station at Surrey Canal Road and associated resilience measures to enable a frequency increase to 20 trains per hour on the line.
