Recruitment campaigns for LU

Request ID: FOI-2280-2223
Date published: 29 December 2022

You asked

Dear Sir/ Madam, Would you be able to tell me the following regarding recruitment please? Could you please tell me when LU last ran campaigns for recruitment of Customer Service Staff (I think that's the job title?) I am referring to the Station Staff/Platform roles I mean. How many staff are there in these roles across the Underground. I imagine there must always be a turnover from retirements, people moving on etc, so where/when are these jobs advertised? Are these jobs advertised externally and does TFL have any indication when it is likely to run a campaign for these again? Does TFL have any plans to advertise Train Operator roles externally - like you did when you ran the Night Tube campaign a few years ago. Is there any estimate or any rough idea if Tran Operator jobs will be advertised externally any time soon. Do you ever advertise signal operators or Line Controllers jobs externally?

We answered

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 8 December 2022 asking for information about recruitment campaigns for the London Underground.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. Your questions and our replies are as follows:

Would you be able to tell me the following regarding recruitment please?

Could you please tell me when LU last ran campaigns for recruitment of Customer Service Staff (I think that's the job title?) I am referring to the Station Staff/Platform roles I mean.

  • Customer Service Assistant (CSA2) – 7th June 2022
  • Customer Services Assistant (CSA1) – 27th August 2021
  • Customer Services Supervisor (CSS2) – 21st September 2021

How many staff are there in these roles across the Underground. I imagine there must always be a turnover from retirements, people moving on etc, so where/when are these jobs advertised?

  • CSA2 - 390.3 (Full time equivalent – (FTE)
  • CSA1 - 2464.1
  • CSS2 - 733.4

Are these jobs advertised externally and does TFL have any indication when it is likely to run a campaign for these again?

  • Customer Service Assistant (CSA1 & 2) – January 2023

Does TFL have any plans to advertise Train Operator roles externally - like you did when you ran the Night Tube campaign a few years ago. Is there any estimate or any rough idea if Tran Operator jobs will be advertised externally any time soon.

We do not hold this information - these roles are only being advertised internally at the moment.

Do you ever advertise signal operators or Line Controllers jobs externally?

We cannot locate any roles with the above job titles -  we do have Support Technicians and Technical Officers for Signalling who ensure the signalling assets are maintained and delivered into service safely. These roles tend to be advertised internally only.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
