Traffic changes resulting from Hammersmith Bridge closure
Request ID: FOI-2264-2021
Date published: 24 February 2021
You asked
I'd like to compare the number of vehicles crossing the Thames via Hammersmith Bridge and neighbouring bridges (if possible Kew, Chiswick, Putney, Wandsworth, Battersea) in the period preceding the closure, shortly after the closure, and more recently. It might be possible to do this by adding a third set of figures to your answer to request ref FOI-1103-1920/GH. The third date range might possibly be Sept - November 2020, for example. Thank you.

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 8 February 2021 asking for information about traffic changes resulting from Hammersmith Bridge closure.
Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy.
TfL completed a detailed analysis of the impact of the closure of the Hammersmith Bridge in September / October 2019. It was the output of that detailed analysis that provided the information in the previous FOI which you refer to (FOI-1103-1920/GH).
Within six months, since March 2020, the Coronavirus pandemic has led to large variations in travel patterns and associated traffic flows, across all London’s roads, between and during each of the 3 lockdowns till the present day.
TfL is of the view that it does not make sense to repeat the exercise and update the report until such a time that some stability in traffic flows has returned to London’s road’s network. We therefore do not hold the information you require at this time.
When the network returns to normal TfL will consider whether an update to the original report would be beneficial.
If you are considering submitting a further FOI request please think carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. Where requests are made, please note that our response time may be impacted by the current situation.
If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
Yours sincerely
