Request ID: FOI-2230-2122
Date published: 28 January 2022

You asked

Where are all the signs for the new ULEZ that started October 25th 2021. Starting From Gravesend a2 - Blackwall tunnel? Specifically the signs and location of cameras on A2 rochester way relief road to be precise. Where did use advertise the ULEZ in kent prior to it coming into effect and after? Please include every advertisement you used. How big are the signs on the a2? Are the signs on the a2 able to be seen at night and do they have lights so you can see them with no issues? Whose idea was it to not give people the chance to pay the initial fine like the dartford tolls let you do?

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-2230-2122

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 30 December 2021, asking for information about the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked:

Where are all the signs for the new ULEZ that started October 25th 2021. Starting From Gravesend a2 - Blackwall tunnel? Specifically the signs and location of cameras on A2 Rochester way relief road to be precise.

Please see attached “A2 Rochester Way as built” for this location.

Where did use advertise the ULEZ in Kent prior to it coming into effect and after? Please include every advertisement you used.

Please see this information attached.

How big are the signs on the a2A

Please see attached the dimensions of the signage at this location in “A2 Rochester Way as built”, as well as an attachment for generic sign specifications for ULEZ.

Are the signs on the a2 able to be seen at night and do they have lights so you can see them with no issues?

The requirements for sign illumination are set out in the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016 and all our traffic signs meet those standards.

ULEZ signs, like many signs, do not require illumination by a separate powered lighting unit.  Instead, modern retro-reflective materials are used which ensure the vehicles headlights illuminate the sign face during the hours of darkness and help to contribute to power savings, carbon reduction and streetscape objectives. For the ULEZ scheme we have specified the highest grade of retroreflective material.

Whose idea was it to not give people the chance to pay the initial fine like the Dartford tolls let you do?

The charge can be paid in advance or up to three days after the journey has taken place. We have also endeavoured to provide easy and convenient ways to pay the charge including online, via our Drive in London or App or by Auto Pay. Auto Pay allows motorists to register with us and be automatically billed each time they drive within the zone during charging hours. This effectively eliminates penalties for registered users.

With some 80,000 non-complaint vehicles entering the ULEZ each day it would be neither practical or cost effective to issue payment reminders.

The operation of the ULEZ is detailed in the London Low Emission Zone Scheme Order 2006. A copy of the order is available online at https://content.tfl.gov.uk/lez-scheme-order.pdf.
