We answered

Thank you for your email received on 10 February 2017 asking for information relating to complaints made by cyclists about dangerous driving by bus drivers.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold some of the information you require.

  1. How many complaints were made by or on behalf of cyclists about dangerous driving by bus drivers in 2015, 2016 and so far in 2017.

We record complaints received about dangerous driving by bus drivers, however we do record these as being made by, or on behalf of cyclists. In order to provide you with this information we would need to retrieve and read every individual complaint, which would take an excessive amount of time.

Below are the number of complaints received regarding dangerous driving by bus drivers:

    2015: 6,690

    2016: 7,043

    2017 (01 Jan to 10 Feb): 704

  2. Of these I would like a breakdown of the action arising from the complaint: e.g. how many were contacted, how many warned, how many, disciplined, how many were subject to additional training.

Bus drivers are employed by the relevant bus operator. Complaints referring to a specific event or an identifiable driver are passed to the operator to investigate and take action as appropriate. TfL does not hold information relating to the action arising from a complaint which has been passed to the bus operator.

  3. How many buses have CCTV installed that can be used to monitor traffic incidents of this kind.

All buses in the fleet are fitted with CCTV cameras to provide pictures of most parts of the vehicle interior. The camera installed in the driver’s cab provides a forward view and this can assist with accident investigations. The police have well established arrangements for obtaining CCTV for investigative purposes such as accidents on the highway. Operators can also review the footage in relation to incidents.

  4. Is there any relationship between the outcomes in 2) and whether the bus involved had CCTV.

Although the outcomes are not known, all buses have CCTV, so this is not a relevant question.
