Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 30 January 2021 asking for information about noise on the Jubilee Line.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) and our Information Access Policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you requested. You asked:

Please could you provide me with the noise level in decibels on the Jubilee line between Canning Town and North Greenwich (direction from Canning Town towards North Greenwich). Maximum and minimum noise levels please. The most recent recording you have (ideally from 2020 or 2021 if available).

The latest recording we hold is from March 2020.

Maximum and minimum provide no useful data without the average as context so this is included below.

The noise data below is from inside the passenger area of a Jubilee line train on the evening of 12/03/2020 at 17:50.

The data was collected as the train departed Canning Town until it stopped at North Greenwich and does not include time stopped at the station.

The train was operating at normal line speeds at the time and passenger load was moderate.

Below is an explanation of the measurements:

-Highest noise 92.8dBA Lmax, the duration of this noise was 0.1 seconds (noise was only over 90dB for 10 seconds of the journey).

-Lowest noise 45.7dBA Lmin, this was for 0.3 seconds just as the train started departing Canning Town.

-Average noise 80.2dBA Leq, the average noise level of the 1m40s journey.

Please note that these levels are typical of what is found on a tube train. These readings are not relatable to in-property or environmental noise.

If you are considering submitting a further FOI request please think carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. Where requests are made, please note that our response time may be impacted by the current situation.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely,
