We answered

Our ref: FOI-2163-2021/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 26 January 2021 asking for information about bus speeding tickets / box junctions / fines.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold some of the information you require.

Please could I have the following data from 2018, 2019 and 2020 split by year.

  1. How many speeding tickets were handed out / offences committed by buses on TFL routes.

Speeding tickets are issued by the police, and not TfL, and therefore we do not hold any information on any speeding fines issued.

As drivers are employees of private bus operators and their personnel records are held by their companies, we also do not hold details of speeding tickets received.

We are working to eliminate the possibility of buses being able to exceed speed limits with technology like Intelligent Speed Assistance and around 17 per cent of the fleet is fitted with this currently. This avoids buses travelling faster than a digital speed map of London and, as older vehicles make way to new buses, this will increasingly become a standard feature on a growing proportion of the fleet.

The iBus technology on buses also allows operators to conduct monitoring of bus speeds and check compliance with highway limits – which is something they would normally do if complaints were made to them by members of the public. All our operators also have staff conduct processes in place should speeding complaints be received and the driver be identifiable from the details received.

In order to operate buses in the UK, bus companies must also strictly adhere to the requirements of the Department for Transport.

2) How many reported incidents were there of buses on TFL routes going through red lights.

As above, fines for going through a red light are issued by the police and this information is not held by TfL.

3) How many reported incidents were there of buses on TFL routes being caught in a box junction.

Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) are issued by TfL on the Transport for London Road Network (red routes) we are responsible for. The table below shows the PCNs issued on the TLRN to buses on TfL routes.
