TfL Ref: FOI-2161-2021
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 26 January 2021, asking about USB ports on buses.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You asked:
1) A list of current bus routes which offer USB charging facilities on the network; and
There are over 520 vehicles fitted with USB ports and these are normally available to operate on routes 25, 94, 100, 106, 134, 153, 192, 197, 202, 209, 212, 214, 230, 232, 270, 278, 285, 323, 357, 360, 364, 378, 405, 425, 444, 482, 497, 507, 521, C3, C10, K1, P5, X26 and X140. While buses may be procured for routes as part of the tender process, vehicles may not be permanently in service there as they require routine maintenance, repairs, upgrades or may provide cover on other bus routes for network resilience. While operators procure batches of new vehicles with USB ports, we do not contractually require USB ports for the routes themselves which may have a mix of vehicle types on them.
2) A list of routes which these facilities are planned to be rolled out to, with dates as known; and
As part of the new vehicle specifications for London, we require vehicles entering service on the Red Bus network to have USB ports because it can enhance customer satisfaction. But, as mentioned above, we do not require them on specific routes, only on new vehicles as they come into the fleet. We anticipate a further 280 new buses will be delivered to operators by the end of 2021 which will increase the USB number further, to a total of approximately 800.
3) A graphic map/diagram of these routes, as per the previously linked diagram, if one exists.
We don’t produce graphics or diagrams of the routes but our website provides details of the start and end destinations of bus routes which you may find useful.
If you are considering submitting a further request please think carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as answering FOI/EIR requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. Where requests are made, please note that our response time may be impacted by the current situation.
