You asked

To whom it may concern: I understand that items lost on the Underground are recorded in order to return to the original owner. I would like to request the following information: 1) The total cost of running the Lost Property office from the years 2013 to present. 2) The value of lost property given to the office categorized by train or train station and broken down by years from 2013 to present. 3) The types of items lost on each train or train station and broken down by years form 2013 to the present. I am requesting information under the Freedom of Information Act (2000). Feel free to contact me for clarification or to discuss the information requested. Thank you.

We answered

TfL Ref: 2152-1718

Thank you for your emails received by us on 5 November and 2 December 2017 asking for information about our Lost Property Office.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You asked for:

1) The total cost of running the Lost Property office from the years 2013 to present.

Please see the following table for the total cost of running the Lost Property Office (LPO) from 2013 to present based on financial year basis:

Financial year
(01 April – 31 March) Net cost of running the LPO (£)
2013/14 1,153,981
2014/15 1,439,884
2015/16 1,363,436
2016/17 1,619,172

It should be noted that this cost covers processing items found on all TfL transport services, not just London Underground. As such, no direct correlation can be made between these values and the number of items as provided in response to Question Three.

2) The value of lost property given to the office categorized by train or train station and broken down by years from 2013 to present.

We do not hold this information since we do not place a value on the items that are found.

3) The types of items lost on each train or train station and broken down by years form 2013 to the present.

Please see the attached PDF for the types of items lost on each train or train station, which are broken down annually from 2013.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
