Our Ref:          FOI-2110-1819 / FOI-2135-1819

Thank you for your requests received on 13 and 14 November 2018 asking for information about London Underground Train Operator income.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require. You asked:

FOI-2110-1819:

For the most recent available 12-month period, could you please break down the number of LU train operators or instructor operators whose total gross compensation fell within the following bands:

£100,000 or over
£80,000 - £99,999
£70,000- £79,999
£60,000- £69,999

Please find below the numbers of Train Operators by salary groups provided

Remuneration No. Train Operators
£100,000 or over 9
£80,000 - £99,999 30
£70,000- £79,999 100
£60,000- £69,999 3,145

It should be noted there were also 902 Train Operators who earned less than £60k. This could be made up of those who left but were owed money, or those who are on reduced sick pay, or those who work part time hours.

FOI-2135-1819:

For the most recent available 12 months, could you state what was the total gross compensation received by the highest-paid London Underground train operator or instructor operator. I do not require any identifying personal information such as the person's name, line or depot.

For both of these requests:
In calculating total compensation, please include
(a) basic salary;
(b) overtime payments;
(c) employer pension contributions;
(d) value of free travel for themselves and others connected to them;
(e) customer satisfaction or other bonuses;
(f) extra allowances for working on Boxing Day, New Year's Day or other special days;
(g) any other allowances paid, such as first aider payments.

The highest amount paid to a Train Operator in the last 13 completed periods (12 calendar months) is £103,373.91.

Please note the following:
• The value of free travel for employees or dependants is not calculable and is therefore not included in the figures.
• Allowances and bonuses used include all additional payments, such as any boxing day bonuses paid, or season ticket reimbursement allowances, first aid payments or any other type of additional payment. It does not include any time off in lieu given to Train Operators.
• The data is taken from the payroll records run from Period 9 2018 (11 November 2017) to end of Period 8 2019 (10 November 2018)
• Employer contributions for National Insurance have been omitted from the calculation, as it was not specified in the request.
• Employer contributions for pension have been calculated to remove the pension deficit reduction amounts TfL pay for each employee. This will then reflect the value that TfL pays towards the individuals actual pension.
• Any payroll corrections made during the 12 month period are included, this could mean some employees have a negative amount showing in allowances, bonuses or overtime, because it is correcting an overpayment made before the 12 month period began. The negative amount will deduct from the payable amount, possibly reducing the amount group category the employee is in.
