Request ID: FOI-2103-1718
Date published: 20 November 2017

You asked

I would like to request the following information regarding ZIP cards: 1) What generation/s of Oyster cards they fall under (as the new app says they are 1st gen., despite presence of the blue D on some cards), 2) Plans that exist to integrate the photocard.tfl.gov.uk site with the Oyster online portal/main TfL site, 3) When the scheme/s were introduced, 4) How the design and technical operation of these cards has changed since introduction, 5) The percentage of journeys, overall, by zone and by mode, that are made by ZIP and by other Photocard (broken down between individual card types if possible), 6) Any plans that exist to phase out, replace, or upgrade this card system.

We answered

Our ref: FOI-2103-1718/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 31 October 2017 asking for information about ZIP cards.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

  1. What generation/s of Oyster cards they fall under (as the new app says they are 1st gen., despite presence of the blue D on some cards)

ZIP Oyster photocards are not 1st generation cards. This is an error in the app which shows if someone tries to associate their ZIP Oyster photocards with the app. It will be fixed shortly and any error message will remind users that they cannot use an Oyster photocard with the app.

  2. Plans that exist to integrate the photocard.tfl.gov.uk site with the Oyster online portal/main TfL site

We don’t have any plans to do this. We continue to look at ways to make it easy for customers to use our website, apply for and manage a photocard.

  3. When the scheme/s were introduced

The 5-10, 11-15 and 16+ Oyster photocards were introduced late 2007.

  4. How the design and technical operation of these cards has changed since introduction

The artwork on the cards has been updated three times since their introduction. The card properties have not changed.

  5. The percentage of journeys, overall, by zone and by mode, that are made by ZIP and by other Photocard (broken down between individual card types if possible)

We do not hold this data in a way where we can readily obtain the specific information that you require. However we can advise that on buses around 18% of journeys are free child journeys. Of these around 2/3 are on zip cards, which equates to 12% of bus journeys.

On rail we don’t report fare paying journeys on zip cards separately to other PAYG journeys. Around 0.3% of LU journeys are under-11s being let through for free, but these are by definition not Zip card journeys.

  6. Any plans that exist to phase out, replace, or upgrade this card system.

There are no plans to change the concessions or the technology

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
