Cycle Lanes on the Pavement

Request ID: FOI-2100-1718
Date published: 18 September 2018

You asked

I've come across further examples of TFL placing cycle lanes on the pavement right next to bus lanes. And one thing seems to be a common theme - the communities amomgst whom these facility are placed tend to be largely BAME. Could you please semd me a breakdown of the number and location of cycle lanes place on pavements located next to, or close to bus lanes. Please consider this an FoI request.

TfL Ref: FOI-2100-1718

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 30 October 2017 asking for information about cycling lanes on pavements. I apologise for the delay in replying to you.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. You asked:

I've come across further examples of TFL placing cycle lanes on the pavement right next to bus lanes. And one thing seems to be a common theme - the communities amongst whom these facility are placed tend to be largely BAME.
Could you please send me a breakdown of the number and location of cycle lanes place on pavements located next to, or close to bus lanes.

We are currently working on a cycle infrastructure database which is expected to deliver the level of detailed information you requested but will not be available for use for another 6-12 months.

There are currently two versions of cycle lanes available, a TfL cycle lanes file from 2007 and open street map cycle lanes file from 2010. Either or both of these could be used for an indicative measure to identify the number of cycle lanes within circa 5m of a bus lane.

Supplying the location of the TfL cycle lanes is less feasible as the data is constrained by Ordnance Survey copyright restrictions as it is considered derived data and you ae required to have an OS licence to view the data.

However we may be able to provide a copy of the cycle lanes within a proximity of bus lanes extracted from open street map without any licence restrictions. It should be noted that the data is however unrepresentative and incomplete. Please let me know if you would like me to send you the data from the open street map.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely,

Melissa Nichols
