We answered

Our ref: FOI-2096-2021/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 15 January 2021 asking for information about LU train operators or instructor operators.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

Please see the table below for the numbers of employees within the remuneration ranges you have requested. Total remuneration includes salary, overtime, pension contributions and any allowances including the reimbursement of annual leave not taken before leaving the organisation and season ticket reimbursement payments.

No. Instructor Operators / Train Operators

£100,000 or over

£60,000- £69,999

Please note that Test Train Operators (TTOs) have not been included in the figures shown above. This is because they are a small group of highly specialised staff outside of London Underground Line Operations. They are not London Underground Instructor Operators as they neither operate trains in passenger service nor instruct trainee Train Operators. They receive a different basic salary to Instructor Operators, and adhere to a different contract allowing voluntary overtime.

Please also note that the shift in the number of people from a lower to a higher band since our response to FOI-2110-1819 which you refer to, is due to the basic salary increase over 2 years. 87% of the people in the range £70,000 - £79,999 receive remuneration below £73,000.

It should be noted there were also 620 Train Operators who earned less than £60k.

We record our information in Periods of 4 weeks. The information shown above is for Period 11.2020 to Period 10.2021, which is for the date range 5 January 2020 – 9 January 2021, the most recent 12 month period available.

If this is not the information you are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you are considering submitting a further FOI request please think carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. Where requests are made, please note that our response time may be impacted by the current situation.

If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
