Escalators at Moorgate Station

Dear Team, I am just wondering why the escalator in Moorgate Station (National Rail service between platform 9 and 10) which leads towards the exit has been under maintenance for so long? Currently there is only 1 side working which means crushing queues whilst 500 people all try to use the same side. How can this be justified in taking months and month?

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 14th October 2019 asking for information about the escalators at Moorgate station.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

Escalators 5 and 6 at Moorgate have been scheduled for a full heavy refurbishment including full electrical refurbishment, steps, chain and track replacement within a circa 17-week programme. This is within our normal duration for such projects.

The escalator is completely stripped back, cleaned and all parts re-installed. Some of these parts can weigh up to a ton, such as gearboxes and motors, meaning the work presents some technical and engineering challenges. The closure and durations are discussed and agreed at the highest level, balancing the safety of customers and employees, project scope, cost and disruption to the travelling customers. Due to the location of the machines the operational team have had to manage the one way systems within the station to alleviate any pressures caused by it. The current planned return to service date is 8th November  2019.
