Request ID: FOI-2080-2324
Date published: 29 September 2023

You asked

I am updating my school's First Aid Policy and wanted to know if all bus driver and train/tube drivers are first aid trained, in case a pupil or teacher requires treatment? I will then be able to add this to my policy.

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-2080-2324

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 14th September 2023 asking for information about first aid training for bus and train drivers.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

I am updating my school's First Aid Policy and wanted to know if all bus driver and train/tube drivers are first aid trained, in case a pupil or teacher requires treatment?”.

I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

Bus drivers are not all first aid trained. In a medical emergency bus drivers will contact TfL’s Network Management Control Centre to request an ambulance. This is as set out in the Big Red Book for bus drivers – a copy of which is attached (see the section starting on page 113).

On London Underground train operators are not first aid trained. However, there is first aid provision across stations and all stations have first aid boxes. Further, there is always an appointed person on duty in line with the First Aid at Work Regulations and all new Customer Service Assistants are Emergency First Aid at Work trained.

If this is not the information you are looking for please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely,
