FOI request detail

Bond Street "Burberry Street" renaming

Request ID: FOI-2056-2324
Date published: 04 October 2023

You asked

Hello, I would like to request a copy of any Equality Impact Assessment that was performed as part of the decision to allow Burberry to "takeover" Bond Street station, with all roundels, line diagrams, and exterior signage temporarily updated to display "Burberry Street" instead of "Bond Street", thereby obscuring important signage and confusing many passengers, especially the deaf, tourists and non-English speakers, who rely on visual signage to identify where they are.

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-2056-2324

Thank you for your request which we received on 15 September 2023, asking for information for a copy of the Equality Impact Assessment relating to the promotional renaming of Bond Street station

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy.

For short term changes we do not carry out a formal Equality Impact Assessment, but we do a comprehensive site survey at the station with station staff, in advance of agreeing partnerships, to consider customer impacts and agree which parts of the station can be changed.

During this activation, the station entrance, signage and the TfL roundels on the Central, Jubilee and Elizabeth line platforms were rebranded to feature knight blue, the brand colour of Burberry.

Not all roundels were changed. Corridor and Cross-track roundels were unchanged and roundels in passageways between platforms were unchanged to assist customers, and signage within trains, including the in-car digital displays which show what the next station is, automated train announcements, and route maps within the trains, were not changed as part of the temporary take-over. There were no changes to other digital information, for example TfL Journey Planner or our app, TfL Go. Station staff were fully briefed in advance and also made on-platform announcements to customers.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
