Average speed camera pilot schemes
Request ID: FOI-2047-1819
Date published: 27 November 2018
You asked
What's the fatality figures for 2017, for the stretches of road covered by the four pilot schemes on the A40, A406, A316 and A2. While writing, I also wonder whether, on my behalf, you could request the fatality figures from 2000 to 2017 for the stretch of the A305 and M3 covered by average speed cameras. I would also be grateful if you could check for me, when this scheme was introduced.

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 29 October 2018 asking for information about road collision fatality figures.
Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold some of the information you require.
We're doing what we can to stop drivers speeding so our roads are much safer for everyone. Safety cameras, including average speed camera schemes, play a vital role in our Vision Zero ambition to eliminate death and serious injury from London’s roads.
Please see below for the number of fatalities which occurred in collisions on roads covered by an average speed camera system in London – 2017
A102-A2 1 fatal – 21 March 2017 (Powered 2 Wheeler (P2W))
A316 1 fatal – 5 October 2017 (car driver)
A406 1 fatal – 23 July 2017 (P2W)
A40 1 fatal – 8 December 2017 (P2W)
The M3 does not come into Greater London and therefore TfL does not hold any relevant information. Any average speed camera system on the motorway is likely to come under the remit of Highways England. We are not aware of an average speed camera system on the A305 in London – this is a borough road and the trials are all on the Transport for London Road Network (TLRN) - the above four routes plus the A13.
