FOI request detail

Tube accidents

Request ID: FOI-2047-1617
Date published: 16 March 2017

You asked

How many people have been recorded to have fallen into the gap between the train and the platform every year since 2000? Does TfL record why or how it happened? If so, could I have a full breakdown of how they fell down there? Have there been any fatalities from people falling into the gap? If so how many for each year since 2000? Also, if you have a breakdown for injuries too, then that would be good to have as well.

We answered

TfL Ref: 2047-1617

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 22 January 2017 asking for information about how many people have been recorded to have fallen into the gap between the train and the platform on the London Underground every year since 2000.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we hold the information you require.

Unfortunately, to provide the information you have requested would exceed the ‘appropriate limit’ of £450 set by the Freedom of Information (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004.

Under section 12 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to comply with a request if we estimate that the cost of determining whether we hold the information, locating and retrieving it and extracting it from other information would exceed the appropriate limit. This is calculated at £25 per hour for every hour spent on the activities described.

We have estimated that it would significantly exceed the appropriate limit to provide a response to your current request. This is because it is estimated that it would take more than 18 hours to retrieve and compile the information you have requested. In order for us to establish how or why each incident occurred, and what injuries were caused, we would need to review each incident report form.

We should, however, be able to provide you with the figures for the number of falls in the gap between the train and the platforms, broken down by injury severity. We would therefore invite you to resubmit your request along the lines as suggested.

Please note that we will not be taking further action until we receive your revised request.

In the meantime, if you have any queries or would like to discuss your request, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
