Thank you for your email received by us on 27 January requesting information about the private hire trade.

We have considered your request in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our Information Access Policy. I can confirm we hold the information you require. Please accept my apologies for the delay in our response.

You asked for:

“The number of vehicles and drivers that are currently allowed to accept a private hire booking in London (registered with a private hire operator) for any specific day in January 2017.”

This information is collated on a weekly basis and we are unable to report on individual days.

For the week ending 10 January 2017, the number of unique private hire drivers working, or that were available to work, for a private hire operator is 63,732 and the number of vehicles is 64,424. This number is based on data provided by private hire operators and is subject to change following further analysis and verification of the data we continue to receive. Support and guidance is given to operators to ensure that they comply with this requirement. Failing to provide this information may lead to licensing action being taken.
