Request ID: FOI-1983-2425
Date published: 18 October 2024

You asked

• Could you provide the number of fatigue reports filed by TfL bus drivers to the organisation's safety team, since 2021? • Could you provide a breakdown of the date filed, the operator involved, and a short summary of why the report was filed/any associated incidents?

We answered

Our Ref:         FOI-1983-2425

Thank you for your request received on 23 September 2024 asking for information about bus driver fatigue incidents.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and our information access policy.

Our Bus Safety Programme continuously drives major safety improvements across our network. We fund specific interventions to reduce collisions and improve existing safety processes and data collection.

Though we work closely with operators to ensure that fatigue is being appropriately managed across the bus network, we do not hold the information you have requested as the exact details of fatigue reports would be held by the bus operators.

We are currently trialling fatigue detection technology (FDT) in approximately 200 buses. We intend to fit more than 400 buses with FDT and are on target to install 300 by the end of November. However the automated alerts are reported to the bus operators. We will only be aware of them in general terms as aggregated and anonymised data within the project report which will be available towards the end of the project in Spring 2025.

A report was carried out by Loughborough University on driver fatigue and is available on our website that may be of interest:

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
