We answered
TfL Ref: FOI-1952-1920
Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 28 September 2019.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require. You asked:
Would it please be possible to know, what trains on the underground contain asbestos materials?
Passenger rolling stock in regular service on London Underground consists of the following:
Train Type Lines
S stock Metropolitan, District, Circle and Hammersmith and City
2009 Stock Victoria
1996 Stock Jubilee
1995 Stock Northern
1992 Stock Central, Waterloo and City
1973 Stock Piccadilly
1972 Stock Bakerloo
Of the above, only the Piccadilly and Bakerloo line trains have limited quantities of asbestos containing materials present, all of which are away from passenger facing areas. London Underground also operate a number of engineering trains and a number of these also contain asbestos. These include Battery locos, the Track Recording Vehicle, used to monitor track condition and other specialist vehicles operated by competent Engineers. LU have also retained a number of older trains, known as Heritage Fleet, which also have asbestos present. These are occasionally brought into service for special events.
The asbestos mentioned above is all managed in accordance with the Control of Asbestos Regulations (2012) by a specialist team within TfL who ensure that it is maintained in good condition and arrange remediation by Licenced contractors as required. Customers and staff are not at risk from exposure.
