Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 23 August 2023 asking for information about the speed limit on the A40 Westway.
Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold some of the information you require.
The A40 Westway is a high priority project on Transport for London’s capital programme and includes the refurbishment of critical elements of the structure. Due to budget constraints, this project has been phased over a number of years.
TfL have completed the replacement of a major expansion joint in 2022 and the next phases of the project will progress the replacement of the remaining comb joints across the structure. Delivery is planned to commence in 2024 and will, subject to budget availability and network access, aim to complete the replacement of remaining expansion joints by 2025.
We do not hold any specific ‘documents’ from TfL Engineering, however, the 30mph speed limit was recommended due to the age and condition of the 53 year old tooth comb / roller shutter joints, and has been implemented to ensure the safety of the public is maintained, and to reduce the impact of traffic on these critical parts of the structure. Once the refurbishment works are complete, we will review the necessity for the speed limit and make alterations as appropriate.
