Traffic level data

Request ID: FOI-1889-2324
Date published: 18 September 2023

You asked

To whom it may concern, Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I would like to request the following information: Traffic Level Data from 2018 or 2019 (preferably 18') and from 2022, as gleaned from the ANPR cameras on Hackney Road and Bethnal Green Road. To be specific, I wish to request the following: for each ANPR camera: - number of vehicles recorded per day, per week, per year: - for the year 2018 (or 2019 if 2018 not available) - and for the year 2022 To be clear, this request is only for total number of vehicles seen, and not for identifying data of any individual vehicle. This information will be used for the purposes of an EU funded journalistic investigation into Low Traffic Neighbourhood's and will not be shared beyond this correspondence. Please do not hesitate to contact me on this email address should any aspect of my request require clarification.

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 4 September 2023 asking for traffic data.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold some of the information you require.

TfL does not routinely use ANPR cameras for the counting of traffic volumes.

As an alternative to the ANPR data requested, please find attached the daily data from our Automatic Traffic Counter (ATC) on Bethnal Green Road for 2018 and 2022. This is split by day, so the sum of the numbers will provide the annual total.

The column “Patched” informs if data for the automatic traffic counter was available or not. If the sensor has no data, then a value is estimated using robust estimation techniques based on other historic data from the same sensor and this estimate is “patched” into the data stream.

In the “Patched” column:

  • If there is no patch number – it is direct data form the ATC for that time interval.
  • If the patch number is  either “2 or 3” then it is historic data used from the same ATC patched into the data series to provide data continuity.

Note patch type 2 or 3 refers to a different estimation procedure.

We do not have an ATC on Hackney Road, and therefore the information requested is not held.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
