You asked

Hello! I'm a university student doing a statistics module, and I've decided to investigate effects of traffic count, wind speed, temperature, and air pressure on different pollutants at Westminster Marylebone Road between Jan 1st 2001- Jan 1st 2020. Could you possibly send me this data? Thanks in advance!

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-1889-2021

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 18th December 2020 asking for information about traffic levels on Marylebone Road since 2001.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

Daily Average Traffic Count Data Jan 1st 2001- Jan 1st 2020: Hello! I'm a university student doing a statistics module, and I've decided to investigate effects of traffic count, wind speed, temperature, and air pressure on different pollutants at Westminster Marylebone Road between Jan 1st 2001- Jan 1st 2020. Could you possibly send me this data?”

I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. However, the data held by TfL in this regard only goes back as far as 2013. Further, our data is from a single ATC (Automatic Traffic Counter) and is “patched” - meaning that any gaps within the data due to communication issues or physical damage to the kit are filled with a substitute value based on historic data. With this in mind you may wish to use the data from the link below instead. This is the Department for Transport’s (DfT) interactive website where you can search for a road and then extract data directly from the site, in a AADF (Annual Average Daily Flow) format, which would presumably be of more value than our daily outputs data. The DfT data also has multiple count points along Marylebone road going back to the year 2000, and also has the vehicle mode breakdown included:

In accordance with section 21 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply you with a copy of the requested information as it is already accessible to you elsewhere. However, that said, if having reviewed the DfT data you still think there would be value in seeing the TfL data as well, then please let me know and I can ask colleagues to source it.

If you are considering submitting a further FOI request please think carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. Where requests are made, please note that our response time may be impacted by the current situation.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely,

David Wells
