Request ID: FOI-1883-2122
Date published: 20 December 2021

You asked

How much money is available in the Car and Motorcycle scrappage scheme? How many people are on the waiting list to access funds? How much does the mayor's office estimate dealing with the waiting list will cost?

We answered

Our Ref:         FOI-1883-2122

Thank you for your request received on 22 November 2021 asking for information about the TfL Scrappage Scheme.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require.

The Mayor’s £61m scrappage schemes have been hugely successful in helping small businesses, charities, those on low incomes and disabled Londoners ditch older, more polluting vehicles for cleaner alternatives. Following enthusiastic uptake and after taking more than 13,500 polluting vehicles off the road to date, all funds have now been committed. The scrappage schemes have contributed to the high compliance rates in the expanded ULEZ, which saw 92 per cent of vehicles meeting the tough emission standards in the first month of operation. It is expected that the expanded ULEZ scheme, together with the tougher Low Emission Zone standards for heavy vehicles, will result in a fall of around 30 per cent in emissions of harmful nitrogen oxides from road transport across the capital.

At 30 November 2021, a total of 13,500 vehicles have been scrapped, comprising 8,150 cars and motorcycles, 5,230 vans and minibuses and 130 heavy vehicles.

The Car and Motorcycle scrappage scheme was closed to new applicants on 24 November 2021, when all funds had been committed. The terms and conditions of the scheme do not include the facility for customers to be on a waiting list for funds. TfL is currently processing those applications that were submitted before the scheme was closed and will contact individual customers to let them know the outcome of their application as soon as possible.
