Request ID: FOI-1879-2122 Date published: 07 December 2021
You asked
Please could you let me know if the air filters used on tubes are recycled or destroyed to prevent contamination? It would be great for me to know as it will greatly help the project.
Would it be possible to collect one of the filters for research?
We answered
Our Ref: FOI-1879-2122
Thank you for your request received on 20 November 2021 asking for information about the air filters used on the London Underground.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require.
Air filters are used on our tube train and building heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. For building HVAC systems, used air filters are bagged up and taken to our maintainers stores, with a transfer waste register completed and the air filters then disposed of in the correct manner using our facilities maintenance contract. For Tube train HVAC systems, used air filters are disposed of in the correct manner along with other contaminated waste at our depot facilities. It will not be possible to provide you a used air filter as these are disposed of in compliance with the UK waste regulations.
If this is not the information you are looking for please feel free to contact me.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
Yours sincerely
