We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-1876-2021

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 17th December 2020 asking for information about bus lane cameras.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

Following on from the conversion of timed bus lanes to 24/7 bus lanes, can you tell me:

1) the cost of installing new bus lane cameras, if any

2) the cost of converting existing bus lane cameras to operate 24/7

Please note, my request applies to both roadside cameras and cameras in buses (if they are used for monitoring and enforcement)

TfL does not use dedicated “bus lane cameras”. Rather, enforcement is carried out using attended CCTV traffic cameras. These are standard CCTV cameras, approved by the Department for Transport, that are used for traffic enforcement (moving and parking contraventions) and traffic monitoring. These cost around £25k to £30k to install. Where a camera has a view of a bus lane the operator can identify and capture contraventions. No conversion is necessary to the camera equipment to operate on 24/7 bus lanes.

If this is not the information you are looking for please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you are considering submitting a further FOI request please think carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. Where requests are made, please note that our response time may be impacted by the current situation.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
