FOI request detail

How many overground trains have a former first class wagon?

Request ID: FOI-1874-1920
Date published: 26 September 2019

You asked

Whilst using the Overground, I have realised some of the trains have what it seems to have been in the past a first-class wagon / carriage, with better seats, tables, and power outlets. They seem to be at the front or the very back of the train. As you know, Overground has a flat rate and there is no class division. Could you please clarify how many Overground trains feature said “former” first class? Could you please clarify if Overground trains used to belong to another company or network? If you cannot disclose this, can you just state the approximate year in which they were bought and if they indeed had a first class?

We answered

Our fleet of 317s (14x Units) have an old 1st Class Compartment. However since operating as London Overground, all the trains have been de-classified with signage depicting the class removed and are subject to a standard fare.

Could you please clarify if Overground trains used to belong to another company or network? If you cannot disclose this, can you just state the approximate year in which they were bought and if they indeed had a first class?

Angel Trains Limited currently own the Overground trains. We do not hold information on previous ownership or use.

If this is not the information you are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
