TfL Ref: FOI-1849-1920

Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 20 September 2019, asking for information about bus shelters.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm we hold some of the information you require. You asked:

  1. How frequent and how are London bus shelters maintained?

TfL’s shelters are cleaned every four weeks and shelters with advertising are cleaned every two weeks.  During the shelters’ cyclical cleaning programme, any defects such as shattered glass, faulty lighting or damaged panels are identified, reported and repaired. Shelters are normally cleaned during the hours of 22:00 – 05:00 hours for safety reasons and so as not to inconvenience our customers. A general inspection on each shelter is carried out every two years.

  2. The power(units) consumed by London bus shelters  specifically the flight curved bus shelters –

The power unit measure for our basic shelter is 40 watts per hour.

  3. The materials used in constructing a bus shelter specifically the flight curved bus shelters

TfL’s Landmark London shelters are constructed by Trueform and installed by TfL.  Please contact Trueform for details of the materials they use as we do not hold it.

  4. The cost of constructing a bus shelter specifically the flight curved bus shelters –

TfL’s shelters are of varying sizes and dimensions with differing specs related to seating, lighting and bus information units, therefore we can only provide an approximate installation cost of £8k for a basic shelter to £15k for a shelter with additional design features and facilities.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
