Roadwork research

You asked

In the last 5-7 years, the areas around Elephant and Castle through into Central London have undergone a lot of changes to improve and increase the bicycle lanes, as well as to reduce road traffic. These are the specific figures that I am researching: 1. The time of construction and cost of the alterations to the Elephant and Castle roundabout. 2. The same for the bicycle lanes put in that lead for the E&C roundabout through to Westminster Bridge (the A302) 3. The same for the vast alterations made to Lower and Upper Thames Street on the North Bank. (These introduced bicycle lanes and reduced the dual carriageway to single lanes.) 4. Also, if possible, the cost of the four speed restricting methods councils are now using. The names I'm using may be incorrect: a) Pillow bumps - these are the small square bumps designed to be wide enough to slow down cars; but not too wide to allow emergency vehicles to not have to slow down; b)speed bumps - these are the bumps that go the full width of the road; c)Ramps. These are often made of bricks and are full road width where a side road meets a main road. d)Finally, chicanes. This is where they deliberately narrow the road by extending the pavement and curb to force cars to slow down.

Thank you for your email received on 10 October 2017 asking for information about road transformations.

.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our Information Access Policy. You asked for:

  1. The time of construction and cost of the alterations to the Elephant and Castle roundabout.

The construction took place from April 2015 - April 2016. The cost was £16m.

2. The same for the bicycle lanes put in that lead for the E&C roundabout through to Westminster Bridge (the A302).
3. The same for the vast alterations made to Lower and Upper Thames Street on the North Bank. (These introduced bicycle lanes and reduced the dual carriageway to single lanes.)
The East-West and North-South Cycle Superhighways started construction in April 2015 and were launched in May 2016. The budgets for the schemes were £58.7m and £16.5m respectively.

4. Also, if possible, the cost of the four speed restricting methods councils are now using. The names I'm using may be incorrect:
a) Pillow bumps - these are the small square bumps designed to be wide enough to slow down cars; but not too wide to allow emergency vehicles to not have to slow down;

b)speed bumps - these are the bumps that go the full width of the road;

c)Ramps. These are often made of bricks and are full road width where a side road meets a main road.

d)Finally, chicanes. This is where they deliberately narrow the road by extending the pavement and curb to force cars to slow down.
We do not hold this information therefore it is not possible for us to calculate the cost of these speeding restrictions. I would advise you to contact Southwark Council via email [email protected] and Westminster Council.

If this is not the information you are looking for, please feel free to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
