Our ref: FOI-1824-2021/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 11 December 2020 asking for information about staff travel passes.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require.

Travel passes are seen as part of staff recruitment and retention and their provision is a long-standing part of the terms and conditions of TfL employees. Passes in their current form have existed since 2002, under successive Mayors. Historically, the total number of journeys made have been a tiny proportion of the 11 million Tube and bus journeys made per day, meaning no additional services need to be operated.

In order for a former member of staff to be eligible for a retired staff pass, the vast majority of people must have retired at age 50 or over, and have had at least 20 years' service with a participating employer or successor to London Regional Transport. (Chief Officers are only required to do one years’ service to keep their pass. Board members also keep their pass if they complete one Mayoral term).
