Our Ref:         FOI-1813-2223

Thank you for your request received on 31 October 2022 asking for information about rental bicycles and e-scooters in London.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require. You asked:

•           How many Santander rental bikes have been available in London since January 2019. I would like a weekly breakdown please.

Please see the attached ‘Bikes Available’ data. This is the number of bikes available as measured in the bike availability service level agreement with our bike management supplier.  This does not include bikes which were unavailable due to servicing or those lost/stolen.

•           How many Santander rental bikes have been used every week from January 1st 2019 to now.

Please see the attached ‘Hires’ data. This is the number of hires that have been made.

•           How much money has tfl made from these rental bikes each week from January 1st 2019 to the present?

Please see the attached ‘Income’ data.  This information is unfortunately not available as a weekly breakdown.  Revenue data is reported by four week periods. It should be noted that this is gross income data, and does not include any expenditure used to operate the scheme. We have also attached a list of period dates to show what timeframe is covered by each period.

I was referring to the companies featuring in the trial. Therefore the data on Tier, Lime and Dott. I wanted to know:

•           How many have been placed in London over time since they were allowed to be introduced. I am trying to ascertain usage and demand of these scooters in London.

The permitted fleet size can be found on our headline metrics published on our website:

https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/electric-scooter-rental-trial

The maximum daily deployment of vehicles broken down by borough can also be found on a previously submitted FOI request here:

https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/transparency/freedom-of-information/foi-request-detail?referenceId=FOI-1329-2223

In accordance with section 21 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply you with a copy of the requested information as it is already accessible to you elsewhere. This information is updated on a quarterly basis.

•           I would also like to know how much TfL makes off these scooters, and what the earnings have been since the introduction of the e-scooters by TfL.

TfL has not made any profit from the London rental scheme. TfL manages the collection of charges from the operators and retains a small percentage to recover the costs of managing the trial.

•           If you hold the information on the money the e-scooter companies have made across the time period,

We do not hold this information.

•           And their usage rates by people in the city as well that would also be great

The trial has thrived since its launch in June last year, with ten boroughs participating, more than 500 designated parking locations available, almost two million journeys made and 4,425 e-scooter vehicles now available for hire. Trip numbers during the trial can be found on our headline metrics published on our website:

https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/electric-scooter-rental-trial
