EXCESSIVE NOISE AND VIBRATIONS FROM NORTHERN LINE
Request ID: FOI-1803-2021
Date published: 16 December 2020
You asked
In the last two months, residents along and beside Chalk Farm Road have experienced increased noise and vibration in their homes and buildings from the trains running along the Northern Line between Camden Town and Chalk Farm tube stations.
This is a new development and has not been experienced by residents who have lived here for the last 20 years. Therefore you will need to disclose:
- what changes to the service, tunnels, trains, equipment and systems connected to the Northern Line have been made during 2020?
- what information do you have about the Northern Line on the Edgware branch that might be linked to an increase in noise and vibrations experienced by residents on and beside Chalk Farm Road?
Thank you

What changes to the service, tunnels, trains, equipment and systems connected to the Northern Line have been made during 2020?
- Service – The train service remains the same, there was a reduced time table earlier in the year but normal timetable has now resumed.
- Tunnels – The tunnels have not changed, the area of this complaint is just south of Chalk Farm station platforms.
- Trains – The trains have not changed, it is the same fleet of rolling stock that has been in operation for over 20 years.
- Equipment and systems connected to the Northern line – Nothing in this area has changed that would have any impact on noise and vibration.
What information do you have about the Northern Line on the Edgware branch that might be linked to an increase in noise and vibrations experienced by residents on and beside Chalk Farm Road?
We have noted that 2 new large buildings that have been built next to the Northern line tunnel this can alter the way vibrations and noise travel through the ground in the surrounding area.
